Our Waterfowl Hunts

Swap Hunt:
Taxidermy services and Guided hunts are available for swap hunts. Taxidermy work for a hunting opportunity will be for equal or greater value. Normally on the greater value end to ensure the person taking me on a hunt is getting the best deal for their help. There is only an interest if the hunt offered is for waterfowl or upland birds. If you have a hunting opportunity to offer, please contact me via the web page to discuss all the details.

About the Hunt:
Hunts can be conducted for just mornings or afternoons, or a combination of both.  All hunts are done by boat or off small islands in the bay. Decoys are set up to get birds decoying for the closest possible shot. The boat that will be used for the trip is a 14ft. V-hull aluminum boat. You will need to bring waders, Texas hunting licenses, shells (BB’s – 4’s), and camouflage clothing. While there is not much need to worry about cold weather, sometimes it does drop down into near freezing temperatures; so bring both warm and cold weather hunting clothes just to be sure as you can never be too safe.

Here in South Texas, we have some of the best waterfowl hunting around. I offer guided hunts for 1-4 people. No minimum on hunters or days, I hunt alone the majority of the time, and when I try to go on guided hunts, I’m always told that it will be triple the cost, or that I have to have another hunter and/or a minimum of two days. But that is not how it works here, if you like to hunt by yourself, but can only stay a day, not a problem at all.

There are two hunts that are conducted, bay (saltwater) hunts, and freshwater hunts at the rivers that flow into the bay. With each of these a much different variety can be found. In the bays, we have the largest wintering population of Redheads in the world! Also taken in the bay (in order of occurrence) are Pintails, Scaup (Lesser & Greater), Red-Breasted Merganser, Bufflehead, etc.

What to Expect:
For the river hunts, the main interest I’ve found is with the whistling ducks. They are very tricky to hunt
because they don’t respond to decoys, and unless you know where they are leaving and coming from their roost, it will be pure luck to get into them. Here in Texas, the first part of the season is going to be your best chance to get both species of whistling ducks (Black-Bellied & Fulvous). Fulvous are not found in numbers as great as the Black Belly, but can be found before the first cold fronts start coming down, pushing them into Mexico, and Central America. Now for the Black Belly, they are here year round, so if you wanted to do both, a bay and river hunt, this would give you the best opportunity at many different species. Other species for the river hunts include: Mottled ducks, Pintails, Gadwalls, Teal (Blue wing / Green wing), Shovelers, and Widgeons. Hunts for the river are done in the mornings, and the bay hunts are done in the mornings and/or afternoons.
